Despite rigorous and extensive research in our field, recidivism remains a persistent issue amongst previously incarcerated people. Some people spend more of their adult life in prison than out. Some may even feel more comfortable when incarcerated or may have no desire to change their behavior when released. Traditional forensic and correctional systems are built on assumptions that justice involved people have consistent and fully developed cognitive processing, impulse control, and communication.  However, neurodivergence, which greatly affects these skills, is not uncommon among justice-involved young adults, creating an invisible barrier to fair procedures and treatment.
